Shakira is a pop and rock singer/songwriter. At the beginning of her career she sang in Spanish and was successful in Latin America and Spain. She then began singing in English to make her international breakthrough. Her English album "Laundry Service" came out in 2001 and went thirteen times platinum, making the little Columbian the world's most successful Latin-pop crossover singer. She has sold a sensational 25 million albums, had a series of English and Spanish language hits (including "Whenever, Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes") and has won three "Latin Grammies", including "Best Latin Pop Album" for her highly respected "MTV Unplugged" album. She has sold more than 45 million records all told. Shakira devotes every spare minute of her day to her foundation "Pies Descalzos", which helps give underprivileged children in Columbia an education and a future. She also became a Unicef Special Ambassador in autumn 2003. |
