George Michael began his career in the early 80s, taking the world by storm together with Andrew Ridgeley as the pop duo Wham!. Wham! was an item from 1982 to 1986 and had numerous unforgettable hits like "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go", "Club Tropicana", "I'm Your Man" and "Last Christmas".
Michael's first solo album after breaking up with Ridgeley was "Faith" (1987). It sold 8 million copies in the US alone and produced 5 No.1 hits in the US Billboard Charts, as well as earning him a Grammy. In 1990 the highly praised solo album "Listen Without Prejudice" came out.
This was followed by further releases, a legal battle with his record label Sony and the loss of his mother and his partner in 1994. Then, in 1996 he brought out his album "Older", with which he presented himself as a more mature, independent and self-determined singer, songwriter and producer. "Older" again went gold and platinum all over the world, even achieving five-fold platinum in Great Britain.
His best-of album "Ladies & Gentlemen" released in 1998 was a huge commercial success, going to No. 1 on the British charts and earning eight-fold platinum. This double CD contained classics like "Careless Whisper", "Fast Love", "Too Funky" and the duet with Elton John "Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me" as well as a duet with Mary J. Blige ("As") that was also a major single.
In 1999 Michael brought out a swing album called "Songs From the Last Century". In the following year he released the single "If I Told You That" together with Whitney Houston. In 2002 George Michael returned to the world stage with his new single "Freeek!", on the Polydor (Universal) label, criticising the Irak politics of George W. Bush and Tony Blair.
George Michael's last commercial album "Patience" was released in 2004. He then announced that he would in the future only be releasing his music as free downloads on his website.
In early 2006 George Michael announced that he would be embarking on his first tour since 1991 - "25 Live". This tour also took him to Germany. At the same time he brought out a new best-of album. As an appetiser the single "An Easier Affair" was released in July 2006.
In 2007 he is extending this tour with the "25 Live Summer Stadium Tour".
George Michael has sold more than 80 million records worldwide to date. |
